What is Cowboy Mounted Shooting?

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the most exciting equestrian sports. It combines elements of Wild West Show exhibition shooting along with the skills of barrel racing, pole bending and reining while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers loaded with black powder blanks.
The objective is to shoot ten balloon targets while riding your horse through a variety of challenging courses. It’s a timed sport in which the competitor who rides the fastest with the least amount of missed targets wins.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is open to all levels of rider and all breeds of equine. Each Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) member enters the sport at the Class level 1 and moves up through the levels as experience and competition wins are achieved. These include Men’s, Ladies and Senior Classes 1-6, as well a Wrangler Class for the younger members.
